Mercer County Technical
Schools
District Profile
The Mercer County
Technical School District is a shared-time technical education system,
serving all of the public and non-public school districts in Mercer County.
Under the auspices of a five-member Board of Education, the school district
also sponsors a comprehensive adult and post-secondary program.
The district's secondary
technical education program and the performing arts program are organized
on a shared-time basis. Shared-time is the concept whereby a student is
enrolled in his/her home school for academic and other educational activities
and then attends a technical school on a half-day basis. Eleventh and
twelfth grade students from all of the public and non-public school districts
in the county are eligible to attend. The Assunpink
Technical Center and the Arthur R. Sypek
Technical Center are designed for secondary technical education. The
Performing Arts Program is conducted
on the West Windsor campus of the Mercer County Community College.
An employment
orientation (special education) program also functions on a shared-time
basis and is located at the Arthur R. Sypek
Center. The purpose of this program is to provide technical and occupational
training for students with special needs between the ages of sixteen and
twenty.
Several "tech-prep"
programs are offered in conjunction with the Mercer County Community College.
These programs offer qualified high school seniors the opportunity to
take challenging college-level course work while still in high school,
gain college credits, and meet all high school graduation requirements.
Adult post-secondary
programs are designed for high school graduates and for those students
who are considered "early leavers". Students may attend school
on an full-time or part-time basis. the Health
Careers Center offers an array of post-secondary health related career
programs such as practical nursing, dental assisting, medical assisting,
nurse aide, and other specialized courses.
The Adult
Evening School provides part-time programs in various occupational
and technical career fields. Programs are designed to assist individuals
to successfully enter, compete, and advance in areas of interest. In general,
our programs are classified as apprenticeship training, trade and industrial,
business/clerical related or personal enrichment/avocational. Customized
training as well as programs offered jointly with Mercer County Community
College are also scheduled. The Mercer County Fire Science Academy provides
programs in firefighter skills, techniques, and certifications in various
related areas. For additional course offerings, content, and registration
information, please use this link to their website: www.dftc.org.
The district also
sponsors an Alternative High School (Thomas J. Rubino Academy) designed
to offer a learning environment different from the traditional form of
education and to assist students in realizing their life goals and choices,
talents, abilities, and career interests. The education services for the
Thomas J Rubino Academy are provided
by Comprehensive Educational Resources (CER), an educational service provider
created to assist New Jersey's public schools, and state agencies in meeting
their ever-increasing needs and demands. The alternative education program
is delivered on the West Windsor campus of the Mercer County Community
College.
