CAREER Prep Programs
What is CAREER PREP?
CAREER PREP is a program of the Mercer County Technical Schools in
partnership with Mercer County Community College.
Career Prep courses are rigorous college level courses taken at Mercer
County Community College for which students receive both college credits
and high school credits.
College credits
can be applied toward Associate degree programs at MCCC
or, in many cases, be transferred to four-year colleges and universities.
CAREER PREP
PROGRAMS
For 2006/2007
Career Prep courses are offered during our PM session
from 11:45 AM to 2:30 PM daily on the Mercer County Community College,
West Windsor campus. These challenging COLLEGE LEVEL courses offer 12th
grade students the opportunity to get a jump-start on their college
education while still in high school. Participants capable of working
independently in a college environment and completing the programs will
receive transferable college credits, as well as their sending school
equivalent credits toward high school graduation requirements. These
courses are absolutely free to eligible high school students in Mercer
County. See your counselor for more information. Specific courses
within each program are subject to change or revsion.
*Some programs may be scheduled outside of the normal PM
session in such cases students will be responsible for their own
transportation.
AVIATION
STUDIES*
Career-Prep
Aviation Studies is designed to address the needs of the academically
successful student with a strong interest in pursuing a career in the
civil aviation industry. Even after 911, the field of civil aviation
expands and so does the need for technicians, managers, air-traffic
controllers, customer service personnel and pilots. Aviation Studies
leads toward the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees in
Aviation Flight Technology, Aviation Management, Aviation Customer
Relations at M.C.C.C. and addresses issues involving the principles of
flight, navigation, air-traffic control, aircraft power plants,
airframes, avionics, maintenance, airport management, aircraft design,
meteorology, aviation manufacturing, production management, and

CRIMINAL
JUSTICE
This
college-level course is designed for qualified high school seniors who
are planning a career in the field of law enforcement or those preparing
for advanced study in law, criminology, social welfare, or criminal
justice. College-level courses covered may include Introduction to
the Criminal Justice System, Introduction to Corrections, The Juvenile

RADIO
AND TELEVISION PRODUCTION
The course
is designed to prepare students for employment as TV camera persons,
directors, character generator operators (electronic graphics), floor
managers, audio board operators, lighting technicians or entry-level TV
production positions with a TV station, cable TV system or private
industry TV facility. Students will be working with state-of-the-art
equipment in a college atmosphere.
Radio
classes feature “hands-on” work with state-of-the-art production
studio equipment including practical work with radio consoles, audiotape
machines, CD players, and digital editing equipment. College courses
covered in this program may include Introduction to Radio,
Introduction to Television Production, Human Communication, and Mass

PROFESSIONAL COOKING*
This
college-level program is designed to provide high school seniors with
the opportunity to jump-start their career in the field of Culinary
Arts. The program will allow students to acquire a variety of
competencies needed to compete in this fast-paced and growing field.
Students enrolled in this program will experience courses such as
Food Preparation I, Techniques of Healthy Cooking, Professional Baking,
Advanced Food Preparation, Safety and Sanitation, and Purchasing for the

BUSINESS
FOUNDATIONS
This
college-level program provides high school seniors with the opportunity
to prepare for an array of careers and programs of study available today
in the business field. Students enrolled in this program will have the
opportunity to build foundation skills in technology and communications

FIRE
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
This
college-level program will allow high school seniors to become certified
as an EMT and qualify for employment and/or volunteer service in that
field. They will also earn certification as Firefighter I, Hazardous
Materials Awareness and Operations, Confined Space Awareness, as
well as Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification. Students
must be eighteen to participate in “live burn” exercises.

COMPUTER
SYSTEMS & NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY
This
college-level technology program offers 12th grade students
the opportunity to prepare for immediate entry-level employment in
business, industry and government information centers and offices. The
program provides the student with the foundation required to build a
rewarding and responsible career in the field of computer systems
networking. Courses taken will include computer hardware, computer
system software, and advanced topics such as data communications and

LANDSCAPE DESIGN & HORTICULTURE
The
Landscape Design and Horticulture Program provides practical and
theoretical preparation for positions in landscape planning, floral
design, and greenhouse, nursery, and turf grass management. College
courses may include Landscape Plants and Materials Seminar, Landscape
Design Seminar, Plant Science OHT 101, and Ornamental Horticulture OHT
