Radio and TV Production

Descriptions: Fall Semester
Program
Objective
Designed to prepare students for employment as TV camera persons, directors,
character generator operators (electronic graphics), floor managers,
audio board operators, lighting technicians or other entry-level TV
production positions with a TV station, cable TV system or private industry
TV facility. Production classes feature work with state-of-the-art TV
studio and control room equipment and include practical work with lighting,
TV studio and portable cameras, video editing, video production in TV,
post production video on computer, electronic graphics, producing, directing,
and also computer art.
Radio classes feature hands-on
work with state-of-the art stereo production studio equipment including
practical work with radio consoles, audio tape machines, CD players,
and digital editing and production equipment. Courses include Introduction
to Radio, Introduction to Television Production, Human Communication,
and Mass Media.
Introduction
to TV Production CMN 141
Basic operation and theory of TV production. Hands-on training in studio
with equipment including camera, switcher, audio console, character
generator, prompter, video recorder and lighting. Students produce,
write and direct a short production.

Introduction to Radio CMN 151
An orientation to commercial radio in the United States. Historical
development, ownership, management, programming, music, sales, promotion,
radio journalism, copy and news writing, audience measurement, the ethics
of broadcasting, and government regulation are covered. Students learn
the hands-on technical skills necessary to operate both analog and digital
consoles and audio editing equipment. Production projects include newscasts,
commercials, and music programs.

Course
Descriptions: Spring Semester
Intermediate
TV Production CMN 142
Prerequisite: CMN 141 with a minimum C grade. Production of television
programming with complete formats such as news, interview, music, drama,
and fashion. Students work at various crew positions.

Radio Production and Announcing CMN 152
Prerequisite: CMN 151 with a minimum C grade
Recording, production, and announcing techniques. Students produce and
announce commercials, interview programs, news stories, and public service
announcements, and practice announcing techniques in the radio laboratories,
utilizing both analog and digital equipment. Students also announce
a weekly program at the student radio facility, WMCC.
