Descriptions: Fall Semester
Program
Objective
Designed to prepare students for challenging fire science opportunities
leading to a career, a two-year degree program, certificate of proficiency,
state certification, or for professional and volunteer fire service
personnel that lead to supervisory and/or management level positions.
Students will also be certified as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT),
Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) and telecommunicator. Classes will
be conducted at the Mercer County Fire Academy’s Dempster Center
in Lawrence Township. The total program includes approximately 500 hours
of classes and training. (This program conforms to the schedule and
format of MCTS).
1st
Marking Period
Building
Construction FIR 104
Building design and construction with emphasis on fire protection and
life safety. Review of pertinent standards and codes. Offered spring
semester of even numbered years.

Introduction
to Fire Science FIR 101
History and philosophy of fire protection and prevention. Survey of
equipment, tactics building construction, extinguishing agents, hazardous
materials, and fire department organization included.

2nd Marking Period
911 Dispatch
Second marking period consists of three courses listed below, which
are averaged into one final grade:

Basic Communications
Operator
This is the first of the courses required to work in a 911 communications
center in New Jersey. It teaches the basic skills necessary for employment
as a dispatcher. Success-ful completion of the NJ state standard test
at the conclusion of the course provides the necessary certification.

Emergency
Medical Dispatcher
This course provides the skills necessary to work in a communications
center providing emergency medical services dispatching and enables
the student to provide pre-arrival emergency instructions to the caller
prior to the arrival of the ambulance. Successful completion of the
standard NJ Test provides the necessary certification.

Fire Dispatcher
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to work in
a communications center providing fire-dispatching services. Successful
completion of the APCO standard test provides certification in this
area.
3rd
Marking Period
Emergency
Medical Technician
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to become
an emergency medical technician. Successful completion of the course
and the New Jersey EMT test leads to NJ State certification.

Marking Period
Essentials
of Fire Fighting
This course provides skills necessary to function as a firefighter.
Successful completion of the course and the New Jersey standard Firefighter
1 test leads to NJ certification as Firefighter 1. Additional certifications
in Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations, and Confined Space Awareness
are included in this course.

Program
Entry Requirements:
Participants must be High School Seniors in good standing, have passed
the NJ HSPA examination, and must be 18 years of age by May to participate
in “live burn” exercises. Participants must be mature, physically
capable of and truly interested in EMT/Fire Fighter training.
