Employment Orientation Program Offerings

The Employment Orientation program (EOP) operates on a half-day, shared-time basis with home school sending districts. Programs in nine areas are available for students, ages 16 to 21 years, with learning difficulties. Referrals are made by a Child Study Team of the sending school district. A complete Independent Educational Plan (IEP) with a recommendation for study in a technical education career field is a prerequisite to enrollment. All of the following program areas are available at the Arthur R. Sypek Center:

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES – (20 Credits)

A course designed to offer training in basic automotive service and repair. The areas of car care, tire repair, automotive maintenance, and minor repair procedures are stressed. Students will be given the opportunity to utilize the tools and techniques of the occupation as well as develop proper work habits and job attitudes.

 

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE– (20 Credits)

A course designed to introduce students to the array of job tasks associated with the custodial/maintenance career field. Students will be given the opportunity to develop basic skills necessary for entry-level employment as yard workers, custodians, commercial cleaner, groundskeeper, and building maintenance repairers. Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are stressed.

 

BUILDING MAINTENANCE TRADES – (20 Credits)

A course designed to introduce students to the fields of masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, insulation, drywall installation, minor construction projects, and painting. The students will be given the opportunity to develop basic skills in these fields through project development. Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are stressed.

 

FOOD SERVICES – (20 Credits)

 A course designed to introduce students to various occupations within the food service field. Basic food preparation, sandwich making, serving, kitchen maintenance, cleaning and/or busing tables, cashiering, and sanitation are stressed.  Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are also emphasized.

 

HEALTH AND CHILD CARE SERVICES – (20 Credits)

A course designed to offer students training for various entry-level positions in the personal and health career fields. Basic skills and competencies in the areas of homemaker, health aide, hospital attendant, and child care aide are stressed. Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are stressed.

 

MARKETING EDUCATION – (20 Credits)

A course designed to offer students training for various entry-level positions within the field of marketing and retailing. Cashiering, retail salesmanship, display/promotion, and advertising are stressed. Students will also have the opportunity to practice their skills through the operation and management of a school store. Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are stressed.

 

OFFICE SKILLS – (20 Credits)

A course designed to offer students training for various entry-level positions in the office and clerical field. The course is presented in a simulated office environment. Computer operations, keyboarding, receptionist duties, mail processing, and filing are stressed. Proper work habits, job attitudes, and safety practices are stressed.

 

SUPERMARKET CAREERS – (20 Credits)

This course is designed to offer students training in various job functions associated with a supermarket. Students also have the opportunity to practice their skills through the operation and management of a mini-supermarket located within the program area. Retail sales, cashiering, customer service, produce management, stocking, and baking are stressed. This course is in partnership with the Wakefern Foods Corporation.
